Pittsburgh International Airport
Art in the Airport Program Proposal Guidelines
Version 2025-01-14
Artists, performers, and arts and culture entities are welcome to propose exhibits, installations, and creative experiences at Pittsburgh International Airport and the Allegheny County Airport. This includes and is not limited to visual, performing, new media, and literary art as well as educational and interactive displays with arts and culture content relevant to the Pittsburgh region. We accept applications on a rolling basis.
We regularly present visual art installations, performing artists, and exhibits organized by regional arts and culture partners. We are open to many more types of programming including interactive displays, special events, and multi-media experiences.
Successful proposals address one or more of the following areas:
Directly Engage Travelers: Exhibitions, installations, and performances with interactive and immersive experiences offer aesthetic enjoyment and engage passengers directly, making the airport experience more memorable. Travelers regain “wasted time” in the airport when they interact in a rewarding way with the installations.
Celebrate Pittsburgh’s Diverse Identify: Nature, technology, and community are key themes we seek to explore to celebrate the Pittsburgh region and create a welcoming atmosphere.
Accessibility and Innovation: Experiences designed for aesthetic appeal and accessibility create spaces that can be enjoyed by everyone.
We do not accept proposals for arts and culture exhibitions and installations that include:
Content not welcoming to all audiences. Nudity, violence, and harmful language do not create the welcoming atmosphere we aspire to at the airport.
Memorials commemorating recent events or living individuals. The Allegheny County Airport Authority does not present memorials for living people, for events that occurred less than five years in the past, or for people who passed away less than five years ago.
Advertising and promotional displays. Our Business Development department would like to connect about advertising and promotional displays. Arts and culture installations must have content that is educational, entertaining, or engaging and not function as a means of solely promoting an organization or event.
For Performances please use the APPLY NOW:PERFORMANCE link on our website.
The proposal process is designed to be simple and straightforward for applicants. It includes an application, review by Art in the Airport staff, and response.
Your proposal should include four items:
- Biographical information, including contact details and bios of presenting artists / creatives / organizers.
- Description of the proposed project. Include information about the content, form, materials, and opportunities for traveler engagement. Outline how the project connects to the themes of nature, technology, and community. Include a timeline for the proposed project. Describe if the project is time sensitive or can happen any time in the future.
- Images, videos, or other media that offer an understanding of the installation, exhibit, or experience you are proposing.
- Budget. The budget should include whether the applicant is seeking funding from the airport, or if the project is already funded.
Art in the Airport staff will review your materials and schedule a follow up meeting if the proposed project is a good fit for our upcoming program plans. We will offer feedback to proposals that are not accepted for presentation.
